How to Cut VCT Tile at the Edge of a Wall

VCT, or vinyl composite tiles, are a flexible, soft tile that can be used on both floors and dry walls. Because the tiles rarely fit perfectly across a row, they will need to be cut to fit the edges of the installation. This may mean a large trim or a small one, but it must be done for each row. To make the process go smoother and to avoid dangerous slips, use a vinyl tile cutter.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the VCT to determine where the cuts should be made. Mark the tiles using a grease pencil and a straight edge to show where to cut.

    • 2

Lift the handle of the vinyl tile cutter so the plate is unobstructed. Lay the tile on the plate so the grease pencil mark lines up with the indentation in the bottom of the vinyl tile cutter plate.

    • 3

Depress the handle of the cutter in one smooth motion, as if you were operating a paper cutter. Lift the handle again and remove the cut tile from the plate.

    • 4

Double check the fit of the cut tile against the other tiles in the installation before installing.
