Installation of Radiant Barrier and Bubble Insulation

The main purpose of the insulation in the walls and attic of a home is to prevent air from getting in from outside and escaping from inside. This helps a home maintain a moderate temperature, while also lowering heating and cooling costs. Radiant barrier insulation and bubble foil insulation generally install in an attic and serve the main purpose of keeping a house cool during the summer months by blocking the sun’s rays.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a copy of the fire codes from the local government building office. Abide by all of the directions for placement and thickness of insulation to ensure safety and compliance.

    • 2

Measure the distance across the entire room from the outermost roof joist on one side to the outermost joist on the opposite side. Add approximately 1 foot to this measurement and cut a radiant barrier or bubble installation strip of this length.

    • 3

Install the radiant barrier or bubble insulation to the tops of the roof joists if the roof deck, or plywood sheathing that covers the roof, has not yet been installed. Install the radiant barrier or bubble insulation to the bottoms of the roof joists if the roof deck has already been placed.

    • 4

Secure the radiant barrier or bubble insulation to the joists with one to two staples every 6 inches. Allow enough slack in between each joist to create a 1-inch space between the insulation and the ceiling.
