PVC Hidden Decking Fastener Recommendation

PVC decks are made with boards that have plastic components. Some PVC decks are made from vinyl boards that resist weathering and don't have to be stained. Others are made with PVC mixed with recycled materials to form dense composite boards. It can be difficult and time-consuming to screw in these boards, so many are designed to use hidden fasteners instead, small brackets locked into the bottoms of the boards that keep the deck in place.
  1. Compatibility

    • When looking for hidden deck fasteners, pay close attention to applicability. Not all PVC deck boards are alike, and not all fasteners will work with each variety. Tiger Claw TC-3S fasteners, for example, may work on PVC decking and Trex decking, but not on cellular PVC decking or pre-grooved decking. There are different fasteners for different brands and models. Read your instructions and choose carefully.

    Finish

    • Your hidden deck fasteners should be made of tough plastic materials with corrosion-resistant coatings. Look for black oxide finishes with sealers added for greater protection. If you live in an area that has frequent and dramatic temperature changes, consider looking for galvanized metal fasteners that can handle against the various temperatures better than plastic.

    Experience

    • For most fasteners, basic hammer, screw gun, drill bit and sledge hammer selections will be enough for installation. However, proprietary systems may require specialized tools. When possible, use ProClip and Tiger Claw brands or similar options that can be installed using tools you already have. If you have plenty of room underneath your deck, consider the Deckmaster right-angle brackets designed to attach to the top of the deck joists and undersides of the boards.

    Boards

    • Pay close to attention to whether your boards are pre-grooved. Pre-grooved boards are typically designed to work with one kind of fastener made to fit inside that groove. For example, Trex decking is designed for the Trex Hideaway fastener, so other fasteners won't properly attach the boards. TimberTech decking requires Concealoc fasteners. Manufacturer recommendations should provide all the facts you need.
