Foam board is made from compressed fibers bound together between layers of cardboard, cement or other materials. Foam board can act as insulation for shower walls, keeping heat contained. It can also perform moisture protection functions, preventing or minimizing leaks. You do not need to use foam board for most poly-composite wall installations. However, always follow manufacturer instructions if it advises using any type of backer board.
Foam board often comes with a fiberglass coating or one made of fiber cement. Some boards come with plastic membranes attached to the paneling. These all help protect against moisture damage, leaks and similar issues that can develop in bathrooms. While the source of a leak will still need to be dealt with, backed foam boards can create a first layer of defense that keeps your walls and floors more protected.
Polycomposite walls need to be installed on a completely level surface to ensure proper adhesion and avoid any cracking or warping problems later on in the life of the shower. Leveling walls for these additions can be difficult, and foam board is often the simplest solution. It can cover up a variety of flaws and surface issues that would otherwise impede installation.
While installing over drywall is an option, some type of insulation covering is best for a shower wall installation. It does not have to be foam board. A liquid membrane coating on the walls can provide protection, for instance. Some shower walls come with the panels and membranes they are designed to be installed with, creating a kit of materials that makes your project much easier.
