What Is Adjustable Gas Stove Roof Flashing?

Whenever you send a chimney or other venting system through your roof, it is essential to install flashing around the hole you make. Flashing prevents the entrance of rain and snow and ensures a watertight seal. This is why it's essential to use flashing that fits the pitch, or slope, of your roof. Adjustable flashing can be adjusted to a range of pitches. Before purchasing adjustable flashing, determine your roof pitch and purchase a product that includes that pitch in it's range.
  1. Description

    • Flashing is composed of a large piece of sheet metal with a central opening where the vent or chimney pipe passes through. If installed correctly with sealed edges, water should pass over the metal and down the roof. Adjustable flashing has the ability to bend to adjust to the correct pitch, making it easy to create a perfect seal. Some products may be used for a small range of pitches, while others are adjustable to nearly all types of roofs and pitches. These products are usually composed of a durable, but flexible metal material, such as galvalume metal. Make sure you purchase flashing that is compatible with your roof pitch as well as the gas stove and venting system you are installing. The opening should be the correct size and fit snugly around the vent piping.

    Determining Roof Pitch

    • Adjustable flashing is often manufactured to adjust to two or more roof pitch measurements. To determine you roof pitch, you will need to get on top of your roof. Take a 12-inch rule and hold it horizontally. Measure the distance from the tip of the ruler down to the roof. This is the rise. The run is simply the distance of the ruler; in this case, 12 inches. For example, if you calculate a rise of 5 inches, your pitch is 5/12.

    Installation

    • Once you have measured your pitch and determined the size of your vent pipe, you are ready to select an adjustable flashing product that is compatible. Some adjustable flashing products have a range of 6/12 to 12/12, so they would not fit a 5/12 roof pitch. Follow installation instructions of the manufacturer. Slide the flashing down over the pipe and carefully bend roof tiles upwards to slide the flashing under them. Set the metal sheet flush with your roof and apply silicone sealant around the bottom edge to secure. Re-tile over the flashing if necessary and secure with roofing nails.

    Venting Gas Stoves

    • Proper venting is essential to the safe installation of any gas stove. In addition to flashing, the correct vent piping and venting accessories are necessary. Always adhere to manufacturer guidelines and building codes, which may require different guidelines for your scenario. For example, if your roof pitch is quite steep, you may need to increase the vent height. When passing vent pipes through combustible walls, proper clearances are necessary. It is important to enclose the vent when it passes through living quarters. If passing through an attic, install an attic insulation shield to prevent combustion of the insulation.
