How to Add a Limestone Facade

Walls of bare drywall do not a living space make -- even a room painted a single color can be uninspiring. Although you could apply wallpaper or a faux finish to jazz up a wall in a bland room, you can spend a about the same amount of money applying a rustic limestone facade. Limestone is available at many hardware or home improvement stores in flat tiles, making it possible for you to successfully complete a DIY limestone facade installation. You'll save money as you customize the limestone facade to suit your room decor desires.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wall using an electric sander with a medium-grit sanding belt. This will remove any uneven texture and create a surface for the limestone tiles to adhere to.

    • 2

Vacuum the area using a shop vacuum to remove sanding dust.

    • 3

Spread a 1/2-inch-thick layer of mortar over the wall using a trowel, then run a mortar rake over the mortar to groove the surface.

    • 4

Press limestone tiles halfway into the surface, spacing the limestone tiles 1/4 inch apart.

    • 5

Spread a 1/4-inch thick layer of medium grout over the surface of the limestone tiles. Excess grout will become pressed in between the tiles.

    • 6

Scrape the excess grout off the tiles, using the trowel. Wipe off the surface of each limestone tile using a damp washcloth.

    • 7

Allow the limestone facade wall to dry for 12 to 18 hours.
