How to Put Fiberoptics in Concrete Counters

Concrete counters offer many customizable possibilities to homeowners. You can color them, mold them, shape them and imprint them in countless ways that allow personal expression. A recent innovation that draws eyes and awe is the cast countertop with inlaid fiber optics that create brilliant and unique displays. You'll insert the glass and fiber optics into the mold before it's poured, then you finish the surface and the fiber optics together for a smooth and even surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Large chunks of glass in the color and shape desired
  • Fiber optic cables
  • Concrete
  • Acrylic fortifier
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hand grinder

Instructions

    • 1

Run the fiber optic cables underneath the countertop frame or mold you are using to pour the concrete into to create the counter. Use your thumbnail to separate the ends of each cable so it frays and widens slightly.

    • 2

Glue the ends of the fiber optic cable to the bottom of each piece of glass. Use two to three cables for small pieces of glass and three to four cables for large pieces of glass.

    • 3

Determine where in the counter you want the lights located. Temporarily set the glass down on the bottom of the concrete counter mold to mark the location of where you want them situated once the concrete has been poured and the outer frame removed.

    • 4

Mix up some concrete into a dry, low-slump set. Add water and acrylic fortifier slowly until the mixture will hold its shape when wet.

    • 5

Shape the concrete into small hills where you want the glass placed. Set each piece of glass on top of a concrete hill. The height of the hill and glass combined should rise up just past the top of the mold. You will grind down the glass until it is level with the concrete once the counter material has been poured and set. Grinding the raised glass and burnishing it and the concrete material will create one level counter, rather than risking the glass getting buried inside the concrete as you pour it.

    • 6

Pour the concrete for your counter and allow it to set up for one to two weeks.

    • 7

Grind down the tops of the glass chunks until they are level with the rest of the counter. Use the hand grinder to grind and polish the counter with the glass chunks until you get the desired finish for the counter. Run the grinder in small circles over the entire counter, using progressively finer pads until the glass and concrete are completely level and the concrete has the desired polish, texture or sheen.
