Craftsman 17215 Sabre Saw Edge Guide

The Craftsman 17215 sabre saw is a handheld model that moves in a reciprocating motion with a sharp-toothed blade. The saw is designed to cut through hard material, such as wood or other building material, and has a control lever to change the saw blade edge as needed. Choosing the correct saw edge setting will help improve the sabre saw's performance and effectiveness.
  1. Low

    • For cutting hardwood, metal or plastic, select the “Low” setting on your Craftsman sabre saw for a slightly hard orbital movement. This setting allows the saw edge to move slower and offers more control to the user. This setting may also be a good choice, when using the sabre saw for the first time, to become accustomed to its movement and power.

    Medium

    • For a slightly more aggressive movement and cutting action than the "Low" setting, select the “Medium” setting. This selection will cut through most hardwoods, metal and plastic but is a little faster and harder to control than the "Low" setting.

    Fast

    • The “Fast” setting uses the maximum orbital action of the saw blade. This setting should only be used on softer materials, such as plywood and soft woods. This setting is not recommended for metal.

    Scrolling

    • The "Scrolling" setting on the Craftsman sabre saw allows the saw edge to move without orbital action. The blade rotates in a 360-degree, up and down pattern for detail work. The scrolling blade is sold separately and can be used on all materials.

    Smooth

    • Reduce splintering by choosing the “Smooth” setting on the saw, which cuts up and down without orbital movement. This setting is recommended for mild steel, hardwood and soft and hard materials that need a fine edge. In addition, this setting can be used with other smooth metal-cutting blades that are available separately from Sears.
