What Is BC ULX Plywood?

The markings on plywood boards indicates the grade of the wood and its recommended use. For instance, "BC" tells you that the plywood is a solid-surface veneer (B) and that the knot holes are 1/2 inch or less in diameter (C). The "ULX" markings indicate the board is recommended for exterior use and made with exterior-grade glue.
  1. Surface Grades

    • Plywood is made from compressed layers of wood to create a 4- by 8-foot piece of wood. The finished material is less expensive than a piece of solid hard-wood. Some types of plywood have a sanded veneer exterior, so the sides are smooth. An "N" marking indicates there are fewer than six wood repairs on the veneer surface. A marking of "A" means there are 18 or fewer repairs to the wood veneer surface. The "B" marking indicates the surface is a solid sheet of veneer and repairs were made to any cracks or splits in the veneer.

    Manufacturing

    • Plywood is manufactured by compressing and gluing two sheets of wood veneer over an interior sheet of particle board. The veneer is chosen according to the grade of plywood. The first sheet of veneer is laid into a press and then the particle board core is laid upon the veneer. A second sheet of veneer is laid upon the particle board. Before each layer is set on top the other layers, a film of glue is applied to the surface. Heat and pressure are applied to the three sheets and dries the glue while keeping the wood sections in place. The plywood is then set aside to cool. BC ULX plywood uses a glue that is resistant to moisture.

    Uses and Applications

    • The wood veneer of BC ULX plywood may have a few knots on the surface. The wood grain and smooth surface makes the plywood a usable material for bookshelves or storage shelves. It is best to use wood screws, instead of nails, to fasten the plywood to keep the plywood to split. If you must use nails, predrill the holes before using the nails. The material also works well for exterior walls or for well-sealed outbuildings. The quality of the outer veneer gives the appearance of a solid wood board. The fine wood grain of the veneer helps to repel the elements. The smooth surface holds up for a short period of time against rain and moisture.

    Care

    • BC ULX plywood can be stained or painted. The paint or stain protects the wood veneer even further from the elements. As the plywood wears down through constant exposure, a new coat of stain or paint can be applied. Sand the surface to remove worn or chipped paint. Wipe the surface down with a slightly damp rag. Check for splintered or chipped edges. Sand the rough edges or splintered sections to create a smooth surface. Apply the new stain or paint and allow the surface to dry completely.
