How Much PVC Cement to Use on One House?

PVC pipes are chemically welded, unlike metal pipes. The chemical weld is done using PVC primer and solvent cement. The chemical weld is secure and lost-lasting. Properly installed PVC pipes can outlast the structure they're installed in, according to the Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association. The amount of PVC cement required for one house depends on the house’s size and the number of PVC pipe systems that are being installed.
  1. PVC Cement

    • PVC cement is applied after applying primer on a PVC pipe or fitting. Most manufacturers suggest using a generous amount and applying the cement aggressively to ensure strong weld. PVC cement is then applied to the inside of the fitting and outside of the PVC pipe, covering a half inch on both pieces. Consider the amount of PVC cement used for each PVC joint.

    Pipes and Fittings

    • Understanding the application of PVC cement, take inventory of the amount of pipes and fittings required to install the PVC system in the house. If the amount of PVC needed hasn’t been estimated, go through the house and count the number of old pipes and fittings currently installed.

    Amount of PVC Cement

    • Welding PVC pipes is an essential part of the installation process to ensure the system is flawless and doesn’t leak. Purchasing more PVC cement rather than an exact amount required to complete the job will ensure proper welding and installation. PVC cement manufacturers often sell it in 4, 8, 16 and 32 ounce cans. Generally, an 8 ounce can of PVC cement welds up to 10 separate joints or connections, depending on the joint’s size. Purchase the cement in small amounts, such as 4 or 8 ounces, to avoid the cement clumping from opening the can. Even when the lid is secured tightly, air may enter the can. When the cement becomes clumpy, it’s no longer effective.

    Warning

    • Each type of plastic pipe and fitting requires using a different solvent cement. Use only PVC solvent cement for PVC pipes. If other pipes, such as CPVC, are being installed in the house, use CPVC solvent cement. Wear latex gloves and protective eye wear during the application process of primer and solvent cement. Ventilate the area thoroughly, because the solvent releases vapors. If the area has no ventilation, wear a respirator for organic solvents.
