Can Face Brick Be Used as a Deck?

If you are planning to use brickwork in your landscaping, you may be surprised to learn there are several different types of brick used in construction. The same brick that you use to build decorative walls is not the brick that you would typically use for pavers. Choose the right type of brick for the job in order to ensure durability. Face brick may look good, but it cannot be used as decking material of any sort.
  1. Face Bricks

    • Face brick is a term used to describe brick that has been specifically formed for decorative landscaping work. Face brick is very useful if you want to create a vertical wall of brick, or place brick in strategic areas for effect. But it is not designed to provide enough structural stability to bear much weight. This means that it must never be used anywhere where people might walk.

    Common Brick

    • Common brick is similar to face brick, but is not specifically designed for its appearance. It is more of an all-purpose brick that can be used for building retaining walls and other structures. It tends to be cheaper than face brick, and has a rough surface compared to the typically smooth surface that face brick has. While common brick has a wider range of use, it also must never be used on any patio or deck project for supporting weight.

    Pavers

    • Brick pavers are molded, brick-like tiles that are specifically designed for use in patios. Pavers are the only brick material that you should use when constructing a patio. Pavers come in both brick and concrete materials, and are strong enough to resist weight and weathering. Pavers come in a number of shades and sizes, allowing you to customize your project.

    True Decking Materials

    • A true deck cannot be made entirely of brick, since it rises from the ground and is created from wood or wood-like boards. If you want a real deck instead of a patio, you will need to use boards for the primary surface. But brick can still be a useful accent along the edges of the deck, or for planters and steps. Face brick can be used for many of these additional touches.
