How to Figure Batts Insulation Coverage

Batts insulation is frequently used to insulate between floor joist and wall studs. It improves energy conservation by restricting air flow. This restriction keeps the house cool in warm months and warm in cool months. To properly insulate a house, determining insulation coverage is essential. The process involves taking a few measurements and performing a few simple calculations.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the space to be insulated.

    • 2

Measure the length of the space to be insulated.

    • 3

Multiply the length by the width to determine the total area in square feet of the space to be insulated.

    • 4

Determine the R-value needed (based on you geographic region) and number of square feet in a roll of batt insulation. Both R-value and square footage will be listed on the packaging.

    • 5

Divide the total square footage by the number of square feet in a batt to determine the number of batts needed for coverage.
