How to Remove Spacers From Glass Blocks

When you install glass block, you have to use spacers to ensure that the blocks are evenly spaced and level -- otherwise, the project not only looks amateurish, but it isn't as stable. The trick to using spacers isn't just pressing them into place throughout the installation process, though. It's also removing them at the right time. Since spacers are made of a durable plastic, they withstand the installation process yet still are breakable, and it's this characteristic that enables you to eventually remove them. While they don't completely come out, the visible part snaps off.

Instructions

    • 1

Smooth over your glass blocks and the gaps between them after they are all in place, but before the mortar sets. Use a clean, wet cloth or sponge to remove excess mortar from the joints and the surface of the glass.

    • 2

Pinch the plastic spacer with a pair of needle-nose pliers, then twist it until it snaps off. Repeat with all of the visible spacers.

    • 3

Fill the holes left by the spacers with mortar dollops. Spread the mortar smoothly through the joints, and wipe away any excess before it dries. Discard the spacers you twisted off.
