An indoor kitchen with a built-in grill can be safely combined with a Corian countertop if certain conditions are met. The Dupont Company's general residential warranty guidelines state the company will repair or replace the Corian product if it fails due to any manufacturing defect during the first 10 years of use. The warranty does not cover damage caused by excessive heat, however. If white marks, rings or cracking appears on the Corian counter surrounding a cooktop, the warranty does not apply. A built-in grill, situated too close to the Corian, can cause such damage to occur.
A built-in grill in an outdoor kitchen has a countertop surround that must stand up to both excessive heat and the potentially damaging forces of nature. The sun's ultraviolet rays may fade the color of your Corian. Dupont does not warranty Corian against acts of nature such as outdoor exposure, weather effects or fire. For an outdoor kitchen grill, a better choice may be a natural stone such as granite. These materials are designed to resist the elements of nature.
In order to obtain the 10-year warranty coverage offered by Dupont, Corian must be fabricated and installed by tradesmen authorized to do so by the DuPont Corporation. Properly trained personnel will separate Corian surfaces from potentially damaging heat sources such as your built-in grill. You should use safeguards such as rubber-footed trivets for the placement of hot objects that have been directly transferred from hot cooktops.
The Corian warranty excludes products made by other suppliers or manufacturers. Custom built-in grills not authorized by Dupont should be avoided if Corian will be used around it. Using Corian in outdoor applications such as recreational vehicles, frill tops, outside counters and boats also voids the Corian general residential warranty. Prolonged exposure to the sun's heat compromises the integrity of Corian. For this reason, outdoor applications of Corian are neither warrantied nor advised.
