Technique for Spraying Acrylic Urethane Enamel

Acrylic urethane is not an enamel, although as a clear top coat it gives the appearance of one. This is because of its hardness and brilliant shine. Acrylic urethane is a professional mixture of two paint bases that combine the short drying time of acrylic with the longer working time of urethane. The result is a flawless, professional finish when applied following the proper procedure. Due to acrylic urethane paint containing a hardener, also known as a catalyst, allowing it to sit too long in your gun can cause permanent damage to the equipment, so wash your equipment thoroughly immediately after use.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your work area, being sure you are positioned out of direct sunlight and drafts and that the environment is free of dirt. Put on your respirator so you do not inhale the paint fumes.

    • 2

Mix your paint according to your purpose and the manufacturer's guidelines and fill your paint gun.

    • 3

Spray in side-to-side sweeping passes over the object. For instance, when painting a vehicle, focus on one panel at a time. Do not end a swipe in the middle of the panel. Slightly overlap passes for even coverage.

    • 4

Apply one coat and allow it to dry for two to five minutes. This is called flashing off.

    • 5

Apply the second coat immediately after flashing off, then allow at least 45 minutes for the surface to dry. Allow at least 48 hours for the paint to dry completely. It can take up to one month for paint to cure.
