Quarry Tile Sizes

Traditional quarry tiles, a type of ceramic tile, are unglazed. Unlike porcelain or glazed ceramic tiles, quarry tiles aren't generally available in a wide selection of colors. The primary choice for the customer is between red or gray quarry tiles. Quarry tiles also come in standard sizes, fitting its no-nonsense uses.
  1. Size

    • In the United States, the most commonly available quarry tile sizes are 6 inches by 6 inches; 4 inches by 8 inches and 8 inches by 8 inches. These tiles are one-half-inch thick. You may also purchase quarry tiles as large as 12 inches by 12 inches. Cost is relative to size. As of the time of publication, the standard 6 inch tiles are available at major home supply stores for approximately $2 per square foot.

    Quarry Tile

    • The moisture absorption rate of quarry tiled is less than 5 percent. According to the North American Tile Council, "When it is extruded, a dense surface forms that reduces the staining and surface porosity of the unglazed tile." Quarry tile has both strength and thickness. Because quarry tile remains unglazed there is no glazed surface subject to wear. Due to these factors, the useful life of quarry tiles for any application is considerable.

    Uses

    • Because of its strength and thickness, quarry tile is often used indoors for highly trafficked or heavy-duty commercial uses. These include warehouses, commercial kitchens, fast-food restaurants, butcher and meat-packing plants and other places in which an easily cleaned floor surface is of great importance. In mild climates that do not experience freezing, it may be installed outdoors. Some quarry tiles are available with abrasive bits embedded in the surface, which provides slip-resistance.

    Disadvantages

    • Despite its hardiness and durability, quarry tile is not all-purpose. Easily prone to stains, it is not recommended for counter tops. For aesthetic reasons, it is rarely used for walls. Spilling any liquids with color on quarry tiles may end up permanently staining them. Quarry tiles can be sealed to aid in stain resistance. If sealing quarry tiles, ask your dealer or contact the manufacturer to ensure you are using the right type of sealing product. To remove stains, use industrial strength cleaner or have the tiles professionally cleaned.
