Noise-Reduction Air Conditioner Sleeves

Air conditioners use intake ductwork to bring air into the unit and venting or output ductwork to blow air back into the house. Powerful fans in air conditioners create this air flow. Because of temperature and mechanical problems, this process can be very noisy. Air conditioners sleeves are insets designed to muffle this noise, so it does not disturb your home.
  1. Air Conditioner Noises

    • Air conditioner noises come from several different sources. Some ductwork vents become loose over time and start rattling as air is blown past. The fan and motor can also start rattling, making noise that echoes through your house. Temperature changes can also make ductwork expand and contract, causing it to shudder and creak.

    Sleeves

    • A sleeve is a metal inset that you can install into your ductwork in order to blanket the sound coming through. Sleeves are designed for through-wall vents that are expelling air into your house. The sleeve either has room to add insulation between it and the wall or comes with a strong metal shell designed to deaden the sound. These are used most often with wall-mounted units that have very little ductwork but need the sleeve for mounting purposes.

    Installation

    • Your air conditioner system must be level and have proper drainage before the air conditioner sleeve is installed. Usually, a contractor needs to install the sleeve in order to adhere to the building codes, apply an exterior covering on the insulation and seal any joints with caulk and spray foam insulation. This seal ensures that the sleeve itself does not loosen over time.

    Additional Benefits

    • Most air conditioner sleeves are designed to do more than just deaden sound. Many also reduce air leaks, which helps conserve energy. They can also prevent excess condensation, which may lead to mold problems in your home. By fully sealing gaps in your venting space, you will also prevent pests from entering through your AC system.
