What Is Trunnion Bracket?

A trunnion bracket is a support part used to mount items onto a surface. The item being mounted is usually a trunnion or another part that needs to move freely for optimum function. The trunnion bracket allows this. Several sizes of trunnion brackets are created for different pieces of equipment. The equipment is attached to the trunnion bracket through a pin, much like meat turning on a spit, over a fire. The turning piece of equipment is never impaired as it rotates.
  1. Identification

    • When looking at the front or back of a trunnion bracket, it will resemble field goal uprights, with two sides and a base. Some trunnion bracket pieces are cut into two pieces in the base for mounting uses. The two opposing sides of the trunnion bracket will have a hole of differing sizes that holds the trunnion pin, which is usually found with the trunnion itself.

    Materials Used to Make Brackets

    • Trunnions used for holding heavy items or in high-heat environments are made of steel, which is often plated in zinc for protection from corrosion. The bracket consists of other metals such as aluminum or an aluminum alloy. Such a trunnion bracket is not used for heavy items or even heavy-use items. The trunnion pins are usually made of steel for the same reason.

    Uses

    • The primary use for a trunnion bracket is to allow freedom of movement for the item attached to it. The trunnion bracket is used to hold many different objects, including swiveling lamps used in mining and also for attaching speakers, radios and other items under shelves or dashboards. You can find the trunnion bracket mounted onto the engine support under the hood of your car. It holds the timing gear so that the part can rotate without being inhibited.

    Where to Find Them

    • Trunnion brackets are sold in hardware and automotive stores as separate parts. However, they are usually found within a kit used to install the equipment or parts that are mounted onto the trunnion brackets. If the directions to your equipment assembly require a trunnion bracket, it should be nestled among the other nuts and bolts within the kit.
