How to Create Old-Fashioned Woodwork Windowsills

Windowsills allow you to display small plants, home accents and decorative vases. However, if your windowsills are constructed using plain drywall, they may look unsightly. One option is to install old-fashioned woodwork windowsills using a few basic tools and supplies purchased inexpensively from any home improvement or hardware store. This enables you to create decorative windowsills without spending a lot of money in the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the existing windowsill, then cut of a piece of 2-inch-thick wood to the same measurements using a jig saw.

    • 2

Sand the entire surface of the wood board using medium-grit sandpaper to remove roughness and splintering, then sand the board again using fine-grit sandpaper to make the wood smooth and soft.

    • 3

Stain or paint the board as you prefer, then allow it to dry for six to eight hours.

    • 4

Clean the surface of the existing windowsill using soap and water, then dry it completely with a towel. Allow the windowsill to air dry for an additional hour.

    • 5

Squeeze a layer of wood caulk over the surface of the existing windowsill, then press the old-fashioned wooden windowsill onto the existing one. Tamp the wood into place with a mallet. Allow the wood caulk to dry for 12 to 18 hours.

    • 6

Squeeze a line of silicone caulk around the edges of the wooden sill, then run your finger along the caulked edge to ensure a tight seal between the wood and the window well. Allow the caulk to dry for 12 to 18 hours.
