What Is a Deck Strap Hanger?

Even though it appears to be a simple process, building a deck requires a lot of thought and planning. Not only must it be sturdy and safe, it might require a permit. Before beginning a deck project, determine whether your municipality's building code includes decks. Knowing something about deck hardware can help you tell the difference between a strap and a hanger and decipher the deck details your local building department may reference.
  1. Straps

    • Metal straps are used to secure and reinforce connections between structural members — beams, posts, joists — during the construction process. Straps may also be referred to as structural ties or plates. Straps are typically flat pieces of metal with holes bored through to aid fastening with bolts or lag screws. Straps can be used in a number of situations and may be shaped and labeled accordingly. For instance, a T strap is used at a T-shaped intersection where two or three pieces of lumber come together. The strap is also shaped in the form of a T to support and reinforce the connection. Straps are made in straight, L and T shapes.

    Hangers

    • A hanger is a U-shaped structural hardware item used to attach joists to girders. The hanger slips under the joist and fits into the 90 degree angle between the joist and the girder or beam. The hangers come prepunched with nail holes for proper securing of the hanger — a galvanized joist hanger nail is the correct nail to use on a joist hanger.

    Specifications

    • Deck building specifications are addressed by local building codes. Checking with the city or county building department in your area will provide specifics that you must follow when building a deck. Some cities and counties may use the International Residential Code written and supported by the International Code Council when referencing deck requirements. Although straps are not commonly referenced in deck building, joist hangers are, and they are typically required on every joist and beam connection. The hangers help distribute the weight of a deck and its occupants. Using straps can help reinforce connections where a joist hanger is not used.

    Application

    • When attaching a strap or hanger, it is important to use the correct nail, bolt or screw. Lag screws or bolts are used with straps and are 6 inches in length, designed specifically for use in wood framing like that found in deck building. Joist hangers require a specific type of hanger nail that is typically listed in the hanger's specifications. A building code may specify what type of hanger and hanger nail to use.
