Narrow Wall Bracing Options

Bracing walls during construction helps provide support for larger buildings and complex structures that need to bear the weight of a roof, and potentially a second or third story. For a wide wall, bracing options are numerous, but many homes and buildings are designed with large windows. This leaves relatively little space for wall bracing components. A number of different devices have been developed to deal with this problem.
  1. Embedded Straps

    • Embedded straps rise up from the ground and clamp onto the sides of the wall studs for extra support. The straps rise up at least several feet, but when fully screwed in, they do not get in the way of construction plans while relieving the wall space of some of the weight it must endure by direction stress into the foundation. These straps need a concrete foundation to be installed correctly, preferably with metal rebar supports.

    Retrofit Clamps

    • Retrofit clamps are more useful in buildings that have already been constructed but still need wall support. These clamps are fitted inside narrow walls and attach to the inner sides of the posts, clamping down on the support beams. The tie-downs also need to be buried into concrete, but retrofits often use an epoxy filler that can bind the clamps even after the foundation is constructed. Clamps can be cast in place if the foundation is not yet formed.

    Plates

    • Plates are sections of metal that can be bolted down at corners to brace walls and are useful for their adaptability. The plates can be used between studs, high on walls where the posts meet crossbeams, or down low where the wall is attached to the frame of the house. These plates disperse stresses throughout the house structure to reduce stress in particular areas, especially narrow walls that need to bear a lot of weight.

    Panels

    • Panels are exterior methods of bracing walls. These do not provide the same bracing power as metal clamps and straps, but are easier to install and can double as insulation and wall coverings. Fiberboard, gypsum board and particle board are all options that can help brace walls. These panels can be easily cut to fit a wall no matter how narrow.
