Metal Pipe Grinding Machines

Metal machining tools are used in a wide range of production environments, from small shops to large manufacturing plants. Metal pipe grinding machines remove excess metal left over from casting, welding and other fabrication methods. Unlike bench grinding machines, grinders used to produce small parts such as pipes are portable for easy maneuverability.
  1. Types

    • Metal grinding machines can be one of two types: electric or pneumatic. These machining tools are further broken down into small-angle grinders, medium or large-angle grinders, and die grinders. Die grinders are specifically used for manufacturing pipes since they lack a rotational axis-change. As a result, die grinders are optimal for finish grinding in dies and piping interior. Additionally, some grinders are equipped with additional features such as pipe belt sanders, which grind flat surfaces and remove weld seams in a clean and straight line.

    Function

    • Die grinding and straight grinding machines are primarily used for metal fabrication and piping work. In addition to removing extra metal, grinders polish and smooth corners and edges. Metal grinders for piping tend to operate at higher speeds than other grinders but have less power due to their smaller grinding wheel. Some grinders contain rollers that work on flat surfaces and remove individual welds and deep scratches. Other functions of metal pipe grinders include repairing damaged scored and damaged surfaces; cleaning and fixing threaded parts; and grinding bevels.

    Accessories

    • Though metal pipe grinding machines are equipped with smaller circular saws and less power than heavy-duty grinders, they are ideal for getting into tight corners and finishing small details. Die grinders and metal pipe grinder machines typically come with various accessories to produce different finishes. In addition to circular saws, these accessories include rotary files, wire brushes, fleece belts, and sanding and polishing disks. The accessories can be attached to straight shank arbors that fit into the grinder's collet chuck. The collet chuck is the portion of the grinder that clamps down on the metal part during operation.

    Warnings

    • Be mindful of safety and take certain precautions before using a metal piping grinder. Check for cracks and loose connections before operating. Because metal pipe grinding machines work at high speeds, do not allow the wheel to remain stationary in one spot for a long period of time. Longwood University's “Portable Machine Tools” publication warns this can cause metal parts to burn and even to push the wheel to crack or explode. Moreover, avoid using metal piping machine tools near flammable solutions and gases; wear protective eyewear during use. Consult manufacturer instructions and recommendations for optimal operation and maintenance.
