Removing Stone Tile From Mesh Backing

A tile floor, countertop or even a few decorative tiles as a back splash add a warm and elegant look to your home. Although larger stone tiles are sold individually, smaller stone tiles come in 12-inch squares of stiff mesh. This helps keep the tiles evenly spaced to make it easier to cover a large area in less time than it would take to lay the tiles individually. However, if you need to replace a tile that has come loose or want to make your own pattern, you'll have to remove the tiles from the mesh backing.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • Mesh sheet of tiles
  • Storage container
  • Baking sheet at least as large as your sheet of tiles
  • Warm water

Instructions

  1. Dry Removal

    • 1

Put on your safety glasses. Although the stone tile is strong and unlikely to break, it's best to take precautions. A snapped tile could send pieces flying.

    • 2

Lay the sheet of tiles on your work surface with the mesh side down. Slide the sheet so one row of tiles hangs loose off the edge of your work surface.

    • 3

Hold the sheet against your work surface with one hand to keep it still. With the other hand, peel one tile at a time away from the mesh and set the tile in a storage container. As you finish with a row, slide the sheet along the work surface to begin on the next row.

    Wet Removal

    • 4

Lay your tile sheet, mesh side down, on a baking sheet. Pour enough warm water into the sheet to cover the layer of mesh.

    • 5

Let the tile sheet soak 10 to 15 minutes. This will dissolve some of the glue on the backing. Leaving the sheet in the water, remove the tiles one by one from the backing.

Rinse and dry the tiles. Keep them in a storage container until you're ready to use them.
