How to Dig Trenches for Sump Pump Hoses

Sump pumps are installed in basement floors where water tends to accumulate. These devices prevent flooding by pumping water out through a hose or PVC pipe. If not buried, sump pump hoses can ruin the look of your lawn; they also must be moved whenever you need to mow. Your sump pump's drain line is susceptible to freezing during the winter; thus, you'll need to know the frost line in your location and dig your trench to that depth.

  Dig a trench no more than 2 feet wide and to a depth of at least 2 feet below the frost line, depending on your location. You must slope the trench while digging it. For every 8 feet, you'll need a slope of 1 inch. For example, if your trench measures 24 inches long, your total slope should be 3 inches. Use a string and a stake at each 8-foot interval to help you keep track of your slope.

  Lay your sump pump hose inside the trench. Sump pump hose kits typically come with a steel hose clamp, a male adapter and are made to fit almost any sump pump. Attach the sump pump hose, with the adapter and clamp, to your sump pump.

  Cover the hose by filling in the trench. Fill the trench with soil, then replace the sod pieces. Gently press the sod pieces into the soil and water, as this will encourage growth.
