Using Brackets

• Building codes rarely require drain pipe brackets. Most drain pipes tend to be rigid, stationary components of the drainage system that are secured adequately with regular attachments to the gutter and ground pipes. They do not necessarily need brackets to be secured. There are exceptions to this, however, in areas that experience hurricanes or high winds. In those circumstances, brackets can provide the necessary support for drainage pipes. Brackets can also help support very long or awkwardly positioned drainage lines.

Materials

• There are brackets specifically designed to fit around the four-inch drain pipe used in most residential homes. Pipe shapes differ, so the shape of your bracket should differ as well. Look for brackets that resist high corrosion, since the brackets must weather wet climates and frequent temperature changes. Galvanized steel is a strong material, but plasticized or copper versions may also be available.

Styles

• There are two basic styles you can use for drain pipe brackets. The first consists of two half-circle sides that are screwed together over the pipe, with two strips of metal that are bolted into the foundation. This is useful for pipes entering or leaving a foundation directly. The second style uses a hinged bracket with a very long screw in the back designed to drill into the foundation wall. These brackets are suitable for pipes positioned parallel to the foundation.

• If you want to compromise between using brackets and leaving your drain pipes loose, look for drain pipe kits that include all the joints that you need to run drains from your gutters into the ground. These components often include slip-on pieces that latch onto one another, sometimes through hidden brackets, to secure the drains in a system that is suitable for milder climates.
