How to Test Permeability of Concrete

When working with a concrete floor, you should always test it to see whether it has been sealed. Depending on how you want to treat the floor, having it already sealed may not be preferable. For example, if you want to treat it with an acid stain, you need to work with an unsealed concrete surface; otherwise, the stain won't be able to permeate the surface. Before you begin work on your concrete floor, perform a quick water test to check its permeability.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep up any debris or dirt that might interfere with the test. If there is water-absorbent debris on the concrete floor, it will be difficult to tell if the water has been absorbed by the concrete.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of water -- a half cup or so -- onto the concrete floor. Let it sit for about 1 minute.

    • 3

Check the area where you poured the water. If the water remains beaded up on the surface, the concrete has been sealed. If the water gets absorbed and leaves a dark, damp spot, the floor needs to be sealed.
