Maintenance & Installation of Quarry Tiles

Quarry tile is a type of ceramic tile. Typically, quarry tile's natural color or pigment is allowed to show, and the tile is not colored before it is fired. This type of tile is unglazed and requires the use of a few specific techniques during and after its installation to ensure that the job is done correctly and that the tile lasts many years.
  1. Installation

    • Quarry tile typically is made in 6-inch squares, but commercial tile is available in 12-inch squares. Quarry tile is installed just like regular ceramic tile. Its surface must be clean and level. Mortar or mastic is applied with a trowel and then textured to provide a better adhesion surface. The quarry tile is pressed into place on the mortar or mastic, and grout spacers are used between each tile for uniformity. Care must be taken when grouting to clean the grout off the tile immediately. Because quarry tile is not glazed, grout will ruin it permanently if it is left on too long.

    Sealing

    • Quarry tile must be sealed after installation and requires re-sealing on a regular basis. The sealant is available from most hardware and home-improvement stores. It is painted on the tile surface, and excess sealant is wiped off with a rag before it dries. The sealant must set for at least 30 minutes before a new coat of sealant can be applied. Typically, two coats of sealant are sufficient. Typically, re-sealing is necessary at least every two years. Test the tile by letting water sit on it for a few minutes, and then wipe off the water. If the tile still looks wet, it needs to be re-sealed.

    Regular Maintenance

    • Harsh chemical cleaners should never be used on quarry tile. The can damage the tile's surface, even if it has been sealed. Cleaning the tile with warm water and a sponge is all that is necessary. Never scour this type of flooring or use rough sponges because they permanently damage the tile's surface. The grout between the tiles can be cleaned periodically with a gentle grout cleaner and a toothbrush.

    Indoor/Outdoor Considerations

    • Quarry tile can be used both indoors and outdoors. It can be used outdoors only where the temperature does not go below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures crack quarry tile. Temperatures apply to the tile's interior uses as well. If you live in a cold climate, do not install the tile in a room that is not heated properly, such as a mudroom or entrance hall.
