What Is Pass-Through Drywall?

Drywall is a versatile building material that is made of a non-combustible core, such as gypsum or concrete, surrounded on the front, back and sides with a paper surface. Drywall is used in both residential and commercial settings to finish interior walls and ceilings. It comes in standard-sized sheets that can be cut to size. You can also cut pass-through holes in drywall to facilitate a number of applications.
  1. Pass-Through

    • A drywall pass-through is any opening in the drywall that extends completely through a wall and allows objects to pass between the two rooms that are separated by the wall. A drywall pass-through is usually custom-cut on-site and involves cutting similar openings in the drywall of both adjoining rooms. The openings may then be finished or covered, depending upon the intended purpose of the pass-through.

    Electronics Pass-Through

    • Consumers and businesses may have the need to access electrical wiring and electronics cabling from room to room. Drywall pass-throughs allow you to connect your electronic devices in one room to the input source located in another room. This process involves cutting a pass-through in the drywall on both sides of the wall and installing a pass-through jack. Devices on both sides of the wall will be able to connect to the same source through the pass-through, by plugging into the appropriate connector.

    Kitchen Pass-Through

    • A kitchen pass-through can provide convenient access from the kitchen to the dining room. A pass-through can allow you to communicate with guests or family members who may be in the dining room while you continue to prepare a meal in the kitchen. It can also allow you to pass foods, dishes and utensils directly from the kitchen to a helper in the dining room to make more efficient use of your time. You can even turn a kitchen pass-through into a breakfast bar by adding a counter top and bar stools.

    Miscellaneous Pass-Throughs

    • There are a multitude of uses for drywall pass-throughs. You can create pass-throughs for mail slots that extend through the drywall and an exterior wall. You can create pass-throughs between rooms with windows that can be opened or closed to provide access or to allow privacy. Drywall pass-throughs may be functional or decorative, such as a niche used to display artworks or souvenirs in adjoining rooms.
