Threshold to Use for Tile Flooring on a Garage

Garage tile installations are no different than any other tile installation in that they need to be installed on a flat surface with thinset mortar. As for the termination points for the tile installation into a doorway where a threshold is needed, there are a variety of different types of thresholds you can install based upon your personal preference and the look you are going for.
  1. Tile

    • The easiest way to create a threshold for your tile floor in the garage is simply to make it out of the same material you are using on the floor. The tiles need to be cut down to the width you prefer for the actual threshold, such as 2- or 3-inch-wide pieces that are installed separately than the floor tile pattern across the doorway or other area. After that, you can install the tiles as you would normally. This method provides you with a threshold strip that differentiates between the two materials you are separating.

    Marble

    • Sold at any home improvement store, marble thresholds come in a variety of colors to fit a number of different doorways. Marble thresholds offer an easy way to add a threshold, as they are normally manufactured according to door width. As long as you know how wide your door is, you can buy an appropriately sized threshold that you then install with thinset mortar, as you would with tile. Once it dries, you have a long-lasting threshold.

    Wood

    • Wood is also an acceptable threshold material and can be used in a similar fashion to tile thresholds. You cut the material down to the width you want and then install the wood strip in between the tile and your other floor. This works great if you are installing a wood floor up against an existing tile installation in the garage, as you may already have scrap wood laying around that you can use to create the threshold.

    Manufactured

    • Manufactured thresholds come in a variety of formats, ranging from reducer strips to T-form coverings that span the gap between two types of material. You can also buy special threshold strips that you install under the lip of the last row of tiles, locking the threshold in place within the overall tile installation once the thinset mortar for the tile dries. Numerous formats are available depending on what you want.
