How to Connect Lumber With Hinges

When working with wood, you may need to attach two pieces of lumber with hinges so they can move, such as for a door, cabinet or as an adjustment feature on an object like a saw horse. The type of hinge you use dictates how the lumber can move. Certain projects require different hinges. For instance, attaching a door to its frame requires a different kind of hinge than creating a folding saw horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two pieces of lumber together in their closed configuration.

    • 2

Position the hinge over the two pieces of lumber with the hinge folded open completely. Remember that the lumber will split apart on the side opposite where the hinge is located.

    • 3

Drill holes through the lumber to coordinate with the holes in the hinges.

    • 4

Screw in the wood screws to secure the hinge in place.

    • 5

Test the hinge to ensure it folds properly. Two pieces of lumber will not fold tight against each other when the hinge is closed.
