How to Find the Steepest Possible Angle for a Roof

The angle of a roof is also called the roof’s pitch, and it’s calculated by dividing the roof’s rise by the roof’s run. The steepest possible pitch for your roof will depend on the rise and run of the roof in general. The rise is how high your roof is and the run is the length from the tallest point of your roof to the outer edge of the roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the tallest point of your roof. This will be clear on the building plans of the house. For example, the roof’s rise could be 10 feet tall.

    • 2

Find the shortest length between the rise of the roof and the outer edge of the roof. This length will give you the steepest angle of pitch for the roof. For example, the run might be 5 feet long.

    • 3

Divide the rise of the roof by the shortest run. In this example, you would divide 10 feet by 5 feet to get 2 feet. This means, for every 1 foot of run, the roof rises by 2 feet.
