How to Use Trusses to Build a Storage Loft in an Unheated Attic

Trusses are structural elements that consist of triangular segments. They provide strong structural support and are commonly used in roof construction. If your attic has exposed trusses, they can be used as the starting point for a storage loft built onto and around the trusses. In an unheated attic this storage loft can be used for many items that will not be affected by temperature fluctuations.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between the inside edges of the angled joists of the truss on each side of the ceiling at the height where you want the loft to be above the attic floor. Add 2 inches to this measurement to allow for overlap.

    • 2

Cut a 2-by-4 board to match the adjusted measurement from Step 1. Cut one board for each roof truss of the loft's length.

    • 3

Nail the boards between the angled joists of the truss with 10d nails and place the boards parallel to the floor of the attic.

    • 4

Measure the width and depth of the area covered by the new boards. Cut sheets of plywood to match these dimensions. Slide the plywood sheets onto the boards and nail them in place with 8d nails. Use the floor of the loft to store items that won't be affected by temperature changes in your unheated attic.
