Architectural Renaissance Molding

Renaissance architecture began in Italy, especially in cultural centers such as Florence, and spread through the rest of Europe in the 13th to 15th centuries. The style behind Renaissance architecture changed until a number of distinct themes emerged in Italy, France, Germany and other nations. Today these styles can be used in home designs to give wood or plaster molding a more ornate or authentic appearance. Several molding projects can benefit from Renaissance styles.
  1. Borders

    • A Renaissance-style border can add an ornate theme for the simplest type of project without requiring an extensive remodel. Some wall panels include built-in borders, but you may buy frames and molding additions in a Renaissance style. The style is defined by intricate decorative work on the corners with floral or emblematic carving. While plaster or wood are common materials used, they may be painted to darken them or make them resemble metal.

    Carvings

    • If your architecture plans already involve changing rooms or walls, you can give the space or spaces a Renaissance look by adding plaster carvings. The molded carvings are defined by their ornate appearance, and often they are made to resemble wood or stonework. Carving works well on fireplace surrounds and doorways.

    Columns

    • Renaissance columns can be a useful addition in exterior projects. They work well as parts of porches and doorways. Real stone columns can be expensive and difficult to install. Plaster molding, however, is a common option, and manufacturers produce Renaissance-style pillars ready to be used in such locations. The columns have a lined and carefully framed appearance that echoes older Greek and Roman styles.

    Other Projects

    • While borders or frames and columns are basic ways to give a house a Renaissance ambiance, many other molding elements can accomplish the same effect. Architectural plans for patios, foundation walls and ceilings can incorporate carved molding to create an ongoing theme. Molding also can be installed on walls and ceilings that are already built.
