How to Measure for an Oval Tub in a Corner Deck

Traditional tub decks are rectangular platforms built according to the dimensions of a tub, or according to personal preference if the homeowner wants to have a tub deck that is larger than the tub itself. However, corner decks are slightly different in that they are triangular platforms that are built into a corner, with the flat part of the triangle (the base) acting as the face of the tub frame. In order to center an oval tub in this corner deck, all you need is some basic, grade-school math and simple carpentry tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Chalk line
  • Framing square

Instructions

Measure the face of the tub frame across its length (the base of the triangle) and divide that measurement in half to determine the center point of the triangle’s base. Snap a chalk line between that center mark and the corner of the wall where the peak of the triangle dies into the corner. This is the center of the triangle, giving you two halves on either side.

Place the tape measure in the corner of the wall where the tip of the triangle is and measure back along your chalk line to the face of the tub frame. This is the overall depth of the tub, from the front of the frame to the back where it terminates in the wall. Divide this number by two. Mark this measurement along the chalk line, and then use a framing square and pencil to draw square lines intersecting your chalk line, so you have a large crosshair in the center of the tub deck platform.

Position the paper template provided by the oval tub manufacturer on top of the tub platform and on top of your pencil lines and chalk line. The template is somewhat opaque, so you can easily line up the marks on the template with the marks you created on the platform. Once the template is in place, you can mark the outer perimeter of the oval frame with your pencil, which is then cut out with your preferred carpentry tool to make room for the tub to be placed within the frame.
