How to Design Basement Stairs

Designing an attractive staircase can turn your basement entrance into a welcoming retreat rather than a rickety descent into oblivion. There are a range of options to consider when designing a basement staircase, such as materials, style, cost and safety. Fitting a new set of basement stairs usually requires the assistance of building contractors. However, the design phase can usually be completed without professional help.

Set a budget. The cost of fitting a new basement staircase can vary widely, depending on the expense of materials used and the time the project will take to complete. Set a budget and choose the materials that fall within your range.

    • 2

Visit basement design websites and interior decorating magazines. Many of these provide color charts and allow you to virtually design your basement online. This will allow you to see how the stairs fit together with the surrounding decor and colors of your basement.

    • 3

Check with you local building code department before beginning work on your basement stairs. Structural changes to a property may pose safety hazards. Possible areas of risk include stairs that are too narrow and an inadequate clearing area at the bottom of the staircase.

    • 4

Use the same size treads for each step on your basement staircase. Using thicker flooring on certain steps can cause a tripping hazard as the change in incline is unexpected.

    • 5

Install a handrail. A handrail opens up a basement staircase and creates a greater feeling of space than a staircase enclosed between two walls. Installing a handrail usually requires the removal of a wall. Hire a builder to check the wall is not structural before attempting to take it down. Stair rails come in a range of finished from frosted glass to ornate metal or wooden designs.

Build a spiral staircase. Spiral staircases can a add a modern, striking touch to your basement staircase. They can be built from many different materials, but they are usually made from wood. A supporting pole is fitted from floor to ceiling, with the staircase built around the pole in a circular pattern.

Add a stencil finish to your staircase. Stenciling is an inexpensive way to add an attractive personal touch to your stair treads. Stencils can be purchased from hardware stores, or you can create your own by carving the inside of wooden planks to your desired shape. Place the stencil on each stair tread and paint around the stencil in the color of your choice.
