The Removal of Aluminum Window Frames

Aluminum window frames are designed to hold functional windows. They are a durable framework solution often used in commercial construction but may also be used in residential homes where fiberglass and wood are not chosen. Removing aluminum frames is a multi-step process but necessary for replacing frames or switching to a different type of window.
  1. Preparation and Removing Glass

    • Before you can remove an aluminum frame, you first need to remove the glass inside the frame. Sometimes you may be able to partly unscrew the framework and remove the glass pane in one piece before you start the project. For pane windows, however, you may need to carefully break the glass before tackling the frame. Cover the window with tape to catch the broken glass and wear protective equipment while your work.

    Unscrewing Frame

    • Once the glass has been safely removed, you should be able to access the screws for the aluminum frame at the fixing points in the frame jambs. Sometimes these screws are on the outside of the frame, in which case you can try to remove the frame with the glass pane still inside. Carefully unscrew all the screws and start to leverage out one frame section at a time. The frame may stick, so using a metal hacksaw and crowbar might be necessary.

    Frame Support

    • Once the frame is gone, consider using a support beam angled from the floor to the top of the window space. The wall relied on the aluminum frame for window support. If the window was large, the absence of the frame might create structural problems if you leave it alone too long. Either immediately install another frame in large windows, or use supports to keep the space open and unwarped.

    Alternatives

    • If you want to replace an aluminum window without removing the framing, there are retrofit windows designed to be attached to older aluminum framing while still providing a new window configuration. This can work well with stucco or other exterior materials that you do not want damaged when the frame is removed.
