Map out the approximate location of each column on the intended surface. Always install columns at corners and work out from the corners to find subsequent column locations, using spacing guidelines provided by the column manufacturer and local building codes.
Mark an approximate location for each column on the installation surface with chalk.
Tack a plumb bob to the soffit, or overhang the columns will support, above the approximate locations marked on the floor to determine the exact installation point of each column. Adjust each approximate location by drawing an “X” with chalk, the center of which sits directly below the hanging plumb bob.
Measure the distance from the installation surface to the underside of the soffit with a tape measure.
Measure a distance equal to that of the distance from the surface to the underside of the soffit on each column, measuring from the top of the column down. Mark the distance by drawing a circle around the column at this point.
Cut along the marks made on each column using a circular saw with a carbide or diamond blade to size the columns.
Sand the top and bottom of each column with a power sander. Check the flatness of the top and bottom of each column with a level. Continue sanding surfaces until level.
Slide the top and bottom molds onto each column.
Determine which column you want to install first. Start with the column closest to the middle of the front face of the soffit, or another location as recommended by the manufacturer of your columns.
Place a hydraulic jack on the installation surface about a foot to the right of the chalk “X” drawn for the location of the first column you intend to install.
Balance a 4-by-4 post on top of the hydraulic jack, holding it steady directly underneath the soffit.
Pump the jack to raise the 4-by-4 post into the underside of the soffit. Raise the post until it raises the height of the soffit by a few inches.
Tip the first column into place by placing the bottom of the column on top of the “X” and pushing the column up into a standing position.
Release the hydraulic jack so the soffit returns to its original height and the header on the soffit, or underside rim, rests on the top of the column. Manually adjust the column so the soffit sits in the center of the top of the column.
Remove existing or temporary support members located near the column, such as wooden beams. Always remove support members one at a time so the weight of the member transfers directly onto the column you just installed.
Install any brackets provided by the manufacturer of the column. Brackets consists of metal plates that meet at a 90 degree angle to form an “L” shape. Drill a screw through one plate and into the column and the other plate and into the floor. Use a masonry drill bit when working on a concrete or brick surface.
Slide the bottom mold into place, over the bottom of the column. Affix the mold to the surface using a drill and screws or bolts provided or recommended by the installation manual.
Slide the top mold into place. Holding it in place with your hands, attach the top mold to the soffit, using a drill and screws provided or recommended by the manufacturer.
Repeat the installation process for each column
