How to Hand Grind Round Metal Stock

Metal stock in a raw form allows you to shape it using a hand tool such as a grinding wheel. The metal stock typically comes in sheets or bars with flat edges that can be ground to round edges using the proper technique. Take proper safety precautions, such as donning a full-face shield, when using a grinding wheel to hand-grind metal stock.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your face shield to prevent injury from flying metal debris.

    • 2

Position the tool rest on the center line of the wheel. The tool rest is in front of the grinding wheel and is used to provide a surface to support the metal as you angle the piece during grinding.

    • 3

Hold the metal stock firmly by the base with one hand.

    • 4

Move the metal stock from left to right across the face of the grinding wheel. The movement from side to side should be consistent to ensure a smooth, round edge. Jerking the metal or moving too quickly may cause a pointed edge instead. Move the opposite end of the metal, the one furthest away from the grinding wheel, in an arc shape to complement the side-to-side movement of the edge being rounded.

Continue to move the metal stock from left to right until you reach the desired roundness for your metal.
