How to Make a Gas Grill Out of Cinder Blocks

Many homeowners dream of a custom built outdoor gas grill, but lack the confidence to begin such a large project. However, the grill's structure can be easily formed from cinder blocks; these hollow concrete forms are lightweight for transport, but can be filled with sand to create a heavy duty base for the grill itself. Pinpoint a prime location for grilling and get cooking on a permanent grill structure that will make you the envy of the neighborhood.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the desired shape for the gas grill on the concrete foundation with a measuring tape. Mark each of the four grill corners with a pencil on the concrete.

    • 2

Place a straight edge between two corners. Draw a straight line between the two corners with a pencil.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 for the remaining corners until there is a square or rectangular shape drawn in pencil on the concrete foundation.

    • 4

Dip the trowel in the mortar mixture and evenly layout a 1-inch layer of mortar inside the square or rectangle shape with the trowel tool. Make sure that the mortar layer spreads out to an approximate 8-inch width just inside the drawn shape.

    • 5

Drag the trowel down the center of the mortar layer to create a small trench. This spacing will allow the mortar to spread outward when the cinder block is positioned.

    • 6

Place one cinder block at each corner of the drawn shape. Make sure that the block's edges line up with the penciled straight edges. Press the block down into the mortar with the hands. Scrape any excess mortar from the block's sides with the trowel.

    • 7

Spread mortar on each cinder block's sides that will meet another block with the trowel.

    • 8

Place cinder blocks along all of the straight edges. Press the block into the mortar on the concrete foundation and push it into the adjacent block that is already installed. Make sure that each block connection point has 3/8-inch spacing; this allows the mortar and blocks to expand and contract with heat and cold.

    • 9

Repeat steps 4 through 8 until the grill's structure is complete. Each grill can be customized to the user's needs.

    • 10

Fill the cinder blocks completely with sand. Correctly installed blocks create a perfect vertical opening for sand to be dropped downward, just like filling a test tube with liquid.

    • 11

Place the new gas grill kit onto the top of the completed grill cinder block structure. Make sure it is centered in the desired area before permanently connecting it to the cinder blocks. Attach the grill to the block structure with the fasteners supplied by the grill's manufacturer. Each new gas grill has varying installation instructions; refer to the manual for exact fastener location installation directions.
