How Do I Build a Greenhouse Atrium?

A greenhouse with an atrium, also commonly known as a glass paneled ceiling, is a visually impressive and effective way to provide your plants additional sunlight. Once the foundation and wall of the greenhouse have been erected, installing a fancy glass atrium will be the final stage of the structure’s construction. The finished windowed ceiling will be a sophisticated way to top off your ambitious garden project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure, cut and nail together 2-by-4 planks to create the atrium’s framework. The glass atrium can be in any angular, domed or flat design that you want, as long as the framework completely covers the greenhouse’s base and that each open section will securely fit your glass panels.

    • 2

Lift pieces or the entire atrium frame to the topmost section of the greenhouse’s base with the use of a ladder. Apply a sealant caulking or putty between the bottom edges of the atrium frame and the greenhouse’s borders before nailing or screwing them together.

Using a quality sealant will keep the greenhouse airtight and waterproof for a much longer time, lowering maintenance time and costs.

Insert glass panes into each opening of the wooden atrium frame and secure them into place along the pane’s edges with glazing compound, caulk or putty. Using a glazing or caulking gun, apply a line of sealant along the edges of the frames so that each pane is snugly in place.
