How to Make a Paint Booth in Your Workshop

Constructing a paint booth will allow you to use spray paint without worrying about getting paint on objects in your workshop. The booth can also filter toxic fumes before they exit the booth, while keeping out debris and dust. You can adjust the size of your booth to the space you have available. Use plastic sheeting or a tarpaulin with PVC pipe to build a paint booth.

Things You'll Need

  • Two air filters
  • Concrete blocks
  • Portable fan
  • Tape
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Tarpaulin
  • Hand saw
  • PVC pipe primer and solvent
  • PVC pipe and fittings

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the frame with PVC pipes. Start at the bottom. Place a 90-degree elbow in the ends of the 10-foot pipes, which will be the side pieces. Cut each pipe in the center and insert T couplings.

    • 2

Cut six 10-foot pipe lengths in half. Insert six 5-foot pipes into the four 90-degree couplings. These pipes are the vertical walls.

    • 3

Place six 45-degree elbow couplings on the tops of each of the vertical pipes. Put a 5-foot pipe inside each coupling. Put another 45-degree elbow coupling into the center to connect each of the sides.

    • 4

Wrap a tarpaulin over the top of the pipe frame. Secure it with tape. Fully cover the ceiling, floor and walls. Use tape and plastic sheets to fill any areas that the tarpaulin doesn't cover. Fold or cut off and tape any excess plastic or tarp. This will prevent loose plastic from getting in the way when you paint. Cut a slit in the plastic so you can walk in and out with supplies.

    • 5

Cut a hole large enough for a fan so toxic air can get out. Tape an air filter onto the output side of the fan. This will trap any fumes and excess spray.

    • 6

Cut a hole in the plastic for the air filter. Tape it in place. Any debris that is airborne will be blocked before it enters your booth.

    • 7

Put cement blocks along the bottom edge of the plastic to hold it down.
