How to Make a Styrofoam Floor Plan

Making a floor plan out of Styrofoam will give you a light-weight scale model of the floor plan. These floor plans allow you to see a three dimensional structure and visualize the floor plan as a building. A Styrofoam floor plan is easy to transport and costs a fraction of what a professional scale model would cost.

Things You'll Need

  • Graph paper
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Styrofoam sheets, 1 ¼ inch thick
  • Styrofoam glue

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the floor plan on graph paper if the floor plan does not already exist. Decide on a scale for the Styrofoam floor plan. The most common scale is 1/12. With this scale a one inch square is equal to a one foot square. The scale for the Styrofoam model is up to the creator.

    • 2

Add 1 1/2 inches to the diameter of the outside walls of the building and cut the plywood to these dimensions. If the building is already set to be on a specific lot, you can cut the plywood to the scaled down size of the lot to indicate how much yard will be left after the building is built.

    • 3

Measure and mark a Styrofoam sheet to represent the floor of the building. Include porches and decks. Cut the Styrofoam with the craft knife.

    • 4

Glue the floor sheet onto the plywood base and mark the locations of all the corners in the house. This means every location where two walls meet is marked on the floor. Draw small circles where sinks will be placed, oblong circles for bathtubs and circle and square combinations for toilets. If the building has stairs or elevators, draw symbols on the floor that signify a stairwell or elevator shaft.

    • 5

Draw the scaled down walls on the Styrofoam sheets. Draw all the windows and doors on the walls where they exist on the floor plan. Do not forget to include the walls for closets.

    • 6

Cut out all the window and door openings from your markings then cut out the walls from the foam.

    • 7

Glue the bottom and edges of the outside walls and place them on the foam base. Hold the walls in place until the glue takes hold. Straight pins can be poked through the walls into the floor if you do not want to hold the walls as the glue dries.

    • 8

Glue and place all the walls that connect with the outside walls. Once these walls are standing on their own, glue and place the other walls throughout the building.
