How to Build Sturdy Wood Shelves

There are many places in the home that can benefit from the storage space provided by sturdy wooden shelves. Basements, garages and storage buildings all are spaces that are good candidates for the addition of shelves. By building your sturdy wooden shelves out of precut lengths of lumber, readily available at lumber yards and home improvement stores, you can cut down on the time it takes to build your shelves.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 6-foot 2-by-4-inch boards parallel to each other on the ground, four feet apart, with the broad side of the board facing down.

    • 2

Lay three 4-foot 2-by-4-inch boards across and perpendicular to the six-foot boards, at two feet, four feet and six feet from one end of the 6-foot boards, arranged like the rungs on a very broad ladder. Nail the boards together where they overlap with a hammer and 10d sinker nails

    • 3

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to create an identical structure.

    • 4

Lift the two structures upright and parallel to each other, with the 4-foot crosspieces on the inside, facing each other. A couple of assistants may be helpful here.

    • 5

Lay the 4-foot 1-by-12-inch boards between the structures so that the edges are resting on the crosspieces. Nail the boards and crosspieces together with 10d nails. Move the shelves into the position where you want to use them.
