How to Build a Back Deck on My Boat

Many boats available for purchase do not have a rear deck built in. This rear deck is often located in the area just forward of the stern and motor area, and provides a secondary casting platform. This platform provides good fishing access for a second fisherman and is conveniently located near the motor controls. By adding this platform to your boat, you can gain valuable fishing space as well as add stability and functionality.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-inch x 4-inch pressure treated lumber
  • 1/2-inch marine grade plywood
  • 1-1/2 inch galvanized decking screws
  • Neoprene washers
  • Marine sealant putty
  • Marine carpet
  • Construction adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the boat at the front and rear edges of the deck. The depth of the deck is your choice, but a deck smaller than three feet is not as functional. Cut lengths of the 2-inch x 4-inch lumber to fit tightly between the walls of the boat. Due to the curvature of the boat, these pieces may not be equal in length.

    • 2

Attach the 2-inch x 4-inch support members to the side of the boat using the galvanized deck screws. Push the screw through the neoprene washer before drilling through the side of the boat. This will help seal the penetration and prevent water leakage into the boat. With all screws tightened and the support rails in place, dab a quarter sized bead of the marine putty over each screw head to seal completely.

Measure the area of the deck and transfer these measurements to the marine grade plywood. Use a scroll saw to cut out this shape. Lay the deck material onto the support rails. Attach the decking to the support rails with the same galvanized screws used to attach the support rails.

Measure the deck and transfer these measurements to the marine grade plywood. Cut out the shape with a utility knife. Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the deck material, and apply the carpeting to the adhesive coated deck. Smooth out the carpeting to ensure adequate application of the adhesive. The deck is now complete and ready for the water.
