Figure the surface area of the pool. For rectangles and squares, multiply the length and width of the pool. If you have an oval pool, multiply the long diameter by the short diameter by 3.14 by 0.25. For example, if the long diameter equals 10 feet and the short diameter equals 7 feet, multiply 10 X 7 X 3.14 X 0.25 to get 54.95 square feet.
Figure the average depth. For a pool that has a consistent depth, use that as the average depth. If the pool goes from shallow to deep, add the depths of the shallow end to the deep end and divide by two to find the average depth. For example, if the pool goes from 5 feet to 9 feet deep, add 5 plus 9 to get 14 and divide by 2 to get an average depth of 7 feet.
Multiply the surface area by the average depth of the pool to find the volume of the pool. In this example, multiply 54.95 square feet by 7 feet to get 384.65 cubic feet of water.
Convert the volume in cubic feet to gallons by dividing the number of cubic feet by 0.134. Completing the example, divide 384.65 by 0.134 to get about 2,870 gallons.
