How to Make a Fire Extinguisher Jet Pack

A jet pack, although portrayed in movies and TV shows as high-tech gear, is actually nothing more than a bottle rocket seen at a fireworks show -- albeit one designed to propel a person wearing it into the sky. A fire extinguisher creates a realistic imitation of the exhaust a jet pack emits when it first begins to lift someone off the ground. Although the "jet pack" won't actually fly, it will give it wearer the sense of what it must be like when a real one is first strapped on and the ignition switch is pressed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fire extinguisher vertically on a work surface. Measure down four inches from the top of the fire extinguisher. Make a dot at that mark with a grease pencil. Measure up four inches from the bottom of the extinguisher and make another mark.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal line across the extinguisher at the top and bottom, bisecting the marks, using a straight edge and the grease pencil.

    • 3

Apply bonding glue to each line, and place an Army utility belt across each of the lines. Press down on the belts to adhere them to the extinguisher. Continuing holding the belts against the glue for two minutes before letting go. Let the bonding glue set for a day before continuing.

    • 4

Place the leather jacket on a work surface with the front face down. Place the fire extinguisher, hose facing down, on the jacket so the hose is even with the bottom of the jacket.

    • 5

Cut a hole with a utility knife on each side of the extinguisher, through the leather jacket, even with the ends of the two belts attached to the back of the extinguisher.

    • 6

Run the ends of the belts through the holes. Have an assistant help you to put on the jacket.

    • 7

Wind the two belts inside the jacket around your chest. Close the belt buckles so the belts are wrapped around you tightly. Close the jacket by pulling up on the zipper or buttoning it.

    • 8

Go outside. Ask the assistant to pull the safety pin on the fire extinguisher that is now a "jet pack."

    • 9

Reach to the small of your back with one hand and grip the lever attached to the extinguisher. Bend your knees as you press the lever. Jump up as your pretend jet pack's "exhaust" shoots out of the hose. Release the lever when it's time to "return" to Earth.
