Sketch an outline of your home plans by drawing the layout of the house. Use a pencil and paper from a sketch pad, and a ruler for straight lines, if necessary. Make sure your drawing is large enough so that you can include any fixture schedules, legends and any other related details. Draw various squares, rectangles and circles or ovals to represent rooms and items.
Use your pencil to distinguish what each room is and include markings for any major appliances, exterior and interior walls and plumbing fixtures as well. Draw a specific shape to represent each of these items.
Draw the water supply line from its source to the house, and then draw all of the fixtures. Make these items distinguishable in the drawing by making darker or thicker lines so that they stand out.
Draw the disposal system of your house. Distinguish this as a drain leading to the outside of the house. This includes any vents or pipes that let out water during rain storms.
Sketch a legend that includes symbols to more easily distinguish each item in your mechanical drawing. Add any pertinent notes, scales and a drawing title. Double-check the dimensions and your checklist.
