Vibration Absorber Theory

The use of vibration absorbers is common in a number of industries, including automobile design, building construction and the design of heavy equipment. Vibration absorbers are also known as vibration dampers.
  1. History

    • The use of vibration absorbers did not become commonplace until the 20th century. The first suspension systems of the 19th century did not include vibration absorbers. The dynamic vibration theory was first published in 1928 by Ormondroyd and den Hartog.

    Vibration

    • Vibration dampers are used to disperse the mass of a force pushing or pulling against a spring. The size and load capacity of a vibration absorber must be calculated because too little vibration absorption has little effect on the potentially violent movements of forces against a suspension system.

    Number

    • It is theorized that a single vibration absorber only works to disperse the force exhibited on an axle in one direction and has little effect on forces acting against a suspension system a long distance from the absorber. Multiple vibration absorbers can be installed within a single system to act as dampers for forces moving an axle in different directions.
