How to Lay Out Trusses in 19.2 Inches

Roof trusses allow framers to complete a roof faster and more efficiently than using rafters; since trusses are built in a factory and delivered complete to the job site, their installation requires fewer workers. Builders usually place trusses every 24 inches, but smaller intervals, such as 19.2 inches, are acceptable. The key to roof framing with trusses, as with all construction, is taking accurate measurements before placing and nailing the trusses into place.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 19.2 inches along the top plate (top board of a wall section) from the front edge of the house and mark the point. Continue placing marks every 19.2 inches until you reach the rear edge of the house.

    • 2

Raise one end truss and toenail (nail at a 45 degree angle) it flush with the end of the front outside wall. Nail the ends of several 2-by-4 bracing boards to the first truss, and run the other ends to the ground at approximately 45 to 60 degree angles: Bracing boards provide support until the roof system is complete.

    • 3

Stack the other trusses against the first. Walk the second end truss to the other end of the building, toenail it into place on the rear outside wall and brace it with 2-by-4s.

    • 4

Set the trusses on the marks and nail them into place. Nail 1-by-4 bracing strips across the top chords (boards running from the roof peak to the building's exterior walls) after you have set 4 trusses: The bracing strips should run perpendicular to and along the top chords, and a nail must be driven through the bracing and into each truss. Continue setting and nailing trusses every 19.2 inches until they are all set.
