Add light and space to the kitchen. Open kitchen walls by installing a wall of French doors leading onto a deck space. Install beige wall and floor tiles, along with stainless steel appliances to make the kitchen seem roomier. Remove part of a wall or an entire wall to blend with the living room.
Make upgrades in the basement area. Install new flooring and a wall unit in a basement family room, for example. Change old light fixtures and add new leather sofas. Paint the walls a light neutral color and add mirror tiles to one wall to make the space seem bigger. Add a room door with frosted glass to add light coming from the split foyer stairwell.
Remodel all bedrooms. Change flooring, window treatments and light fixtures. If the bedrooms are small, paint one wall of each bedroom a bright primary color to distinguish respective rooms. A bright yellow wall or lime green wall in a smaller bedroom adds verve. Use furniture in closely related styles in every bedroom so the whole space will seem coordinated. Bedrooms are typically close in a split-level home, so make sure they look harmonious from the hallway. Install a floor-to-ceiling wall of cabinets in each bedroom to take care of clutter.
Upgrade the bathrooms. Review a lot of home design magazines and visit home improvement showrooms to make good selections. Add sinks, tubs and showers that look contemporary. Don't install main fixtures that are too large if the bathrooms are small. A large shower in a tiny bathroom, for example, will make the room seem cramped. Keep everything in proportion, so the bathroom space feels balanced.
Make some curbside improvements. Build a wider front sidewalk, for example, or add new solar lights across the front of the house. Emphasize the lawn level by building a wider driveway. Plant well-spaced shrubs to give an elegant feeling to the driveway and walkway areas. Make sure the house has an inviting feeling when a visitor drives up.
